Despite having made it, this piece is hard for me to look at. Time has not weakened its capacity to shock me or to bring usually buried raw feelings rushing to the surface. My own birth experience changed me, it has shaped the way I now see and experience life. But it's not all bad. Daily I feel a deep sense of wonder at the preciousness and frailty of life. Without the little human in the picture my cherished family of four would now consist of a childless widower. I gave this little person life and in doing so he saved mine. Every day I feel gratitude for being alive. A medicalised birth is not one any woman would wish for but I owe my and my children’s lives to the intervention of medicine.
